What’s B-Corp?

B-Corp, short for B Corporation, is a globally recognized certification that identifies companies meeting high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. The label goes beyond profit, highlighting businesses that strive to make a positive impact on society and the planet. B-Corp-certified organizations balance purpose and profit, committing to environmental sustainability, ethical governance, and fair treatment of employees, customers, and communities.

What does it imply?

Being a B-Corp means a company adheres to rigorous standards across five key areas: governance, workers, community, environment, and customers. These organizations must demonstrate:

  • A genuine commitment to reducing their environmental impact.
  • Ethical and transparent business practices.
  • Positive contributions to their local and global communities.
  • The creation of a healthy and supportive workplace culture.
  • An enduring focus on delivering value and fairness to customers.

For businesses, achieving B-Corp certification is not just about ticking boxes; it’s about embedding these principles into the very fabric of the company’s mission and operations.

The selection process

The journey to becoming a B-Corp is demanding and thorough, ensuring only businesses that truly meet the high standards receive certification. It starts with the B Impact Assessment (BIA), a comprehensive evaluation that examines a company’s performance across governance, workers, community, environment, and customers.

Businesses need to score a minimum of 80 points out of 200 to qualify, far exceeding the median score of 50.9 achieved by ordinary businesses completing the assessment. Once the assessment is submitted, it undergoes a rigorous review process by the B Lab team. Certified companies must recertify every three years, demonstrating ongoing commitment and improvement.
